what in hot water heaters are worth money for scrap metal?

September 4th, 2010

I notice alot of people scoop up old hot water heaters to sell the metal to a scrap yard, what part / parts of the water heater are actualy worth money? is it just the entire thing, or do you have to take out the tank or whatever is on the inside?

if anyone knows and could share it would be most apreciated.

The copper tank if you have one. Some models are bi-metal, glass lined and have insulation wiress etc… glued to the copper core. It may be not worth the hassle to tear apart, get rid of the sharp scrap, and transport the clean copper for whatever cents on the dlooar you will get for it.

What can I make using small pieces of scrap wood and wood shavings. I hate to see them go to waist.?

September 2nd, 2010

My boyfriend makes cabinet doors and has alot of scrap wood and wood shavings left over. We are wanting to come up with a way to recycle that wood and make something new. The pieces of wood are not very big at all and there are alot of wood shavings. But I just can’t think of a way to recycle it into something new. What would you do?

How about some back to nature – make bird houses/feeders, butterfly houses, bat houses, squirrel and chipmunk stations, etc. I’m sure you can find great plans on the Internet – but for someone who is talented enough to make cabinet doors – these projects would be a piece of cake – if you want you could paint and decorate them. if you make so many that your yard would look like a nature sanctuary – give them to a nursing home – patients can spend many hours watching the antics of birds etc.
I’m sure if you donate these wonderful projects the nursing home staff would put them up.
Thanks for recycling. And being a friend of nature, besides entertaining the elderly and infirmed.
PS. shavings are good nesting material, also good composting material for garden beds.

September 1st, 2010

Is it illegal to walk next to railroad tracks picking up scrap metal as long as i”m not physically taking the railroad tracks apart? I’m guessing there’s probably a lot of scrap that falls from railcars.

people are more paranoid now than ever and doing something like picking up metal by railroad tracks are gonna raise suspicions.

Where can I sell scrap gold for the most money?

August 29th, 2010

I have some broken gold items and earrings that i lost the match to, etc. I want to sell it for scrap. Pawnshops usually offer pennies on the dollar. I know gold is high right now. Where is a good place to sell the scrap so I can get closer to what its worth?

You have missed to say where are you living, which city.
Regardless your living place, when you sell your gold, you sell per gram at the international prevailing rate + or – within acceptable tolerance.

How do I buy copper from a scrap yard?

August 27th, 2010

I am looking to buy about 45,000 lbs of copper from local scrap yards. Can I get that much? What price? What do I need to look for in quality copper?

I think you would be better off to buy from a metal refiner if you want to have any confidence in the purity. From a scrap yard it will not have been cleaned of wire insulation, plumbing solder, lime deposits from water etc.
Why would anyone want to buy that much copper? Please tell us.

How can I find a buyer for Scrap Copper?

August 24th, 2010

Ship-breaking business is a very renown business in Bangladesh now. We have lots of Scrap Copper from ship breaking industry. So, we can export it to other country.

I am an exporter of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) Bottle Flakes, that produces PSF/PSY (Polyester Spun Yarn), from Bangladesh to China. We are having valid AQSIQ Licence from Chinese government, that we are now being upgraded for taking care of "Mill Scale", in addition to PET Flakes. This additional item may cover for the ’scrap materials’ you are aiming for export from Bangladesh.

As of now it is not possible to export copper and such scrap metals from Bangladesh to China since nobody has the AQSIQ for that purpose, as far as our knowledge goes.

Btw, we do hope that we may be able to do so in a month or two if the Addition of Mill Scale in our AQSIQ Licence is completed sooner.

I got the following information from the website named "WorldScrap" wherein they try to project the demands of various scrap materials and price trends:

Copper, zinc producers turning cautious despite a rally in prices
However, aluminium producers remain bullish on outlook.

Industry remains cautious on the outlook for base metal demand despite a rally this month that has pushed the prices of copper, zinc and aluminium by 20 per cent, 19 per cent and 7 respectively on the London Metal Exchange.

The rally came on the back of China’s state reserve bureau purchasing copper and zinc for strategic purposes. The prices of the base metals increase also coincided with global production cuts.

China is a major producer of aluminium. But it does not have enough copper mines to meet its own demand and that prompted the government to purchase copper which is used majorly by the electronics, communications and transportation industry. Copper is essential for making hybrid cars for which demand is likely to pick up in coming years.

However, industry analysts believe that the rally in copper prices is most vulnerable.

"Seasonal factors would suggest Chinese copper imports are set to collapse over the next three months," said Michael Lewis, a London-based Deutsche Bank AG analyst.

Copper was being quoted at $4,816 per tonne on Friday on the LME, a six-month high. The price for the metal had reached an all-time high of $8,900 on July 2 last year on the LME. It crashed by 68 per cent to $2,809 per tonne on December 24, following credit crunch and the global slowdown.

Where to buy scrap metal in Dallas for a good price?

August 23rd, 2010

I’m a metal sculpture artist who moved to Dallas recently. I am looking for a good scrap metal yard in Dallas (or with in 50miles) where I can search for scrap on my own and buy it for a decent price. Any help would be much appreciated.

I used to get some interesting pieces at American Iron and Metal 2215 S Good Latimer Expy, Dallas, TX‎ – (214) 428-2861‎ near downtown but closer to I-45 going overhead. They also have a yard south on something, maybe Hampton. The last time I went to get some new steel tubing, they had much less scrap.
Garland Steel Inc.‎ 312 South International Road, Garland, TX‎ – (972) 494-6000‎ just north of Forest and the DART rail tracks has a large yard with good variety. I don’t know about good prices, I was looking for and found stainless steel pipe for glassblowing and saw several other things – big pipe cutoffs, odd shapes that might be interesting.
Depending on what you are looking for, you might Google ‘Hampton and Commerce’ south of the river for ‘scrap metal’ nearby, Irving Blvd west of Dallas downtown and far southeast Dallas near I-45 and LBJ many of which will be auto junk yards.
I don’t have wide experience further north and Ft. Worth is more industrial than Dallas and within your 50 mile limit.
You might also look at the Thomas Register http://www.thomasnet.com/northern-texas/scrap-iron-steel-4382-1.html
